Roland Garros Interesting Facts

Do you like Roland Garros? Here are some interesting facts you probably don`t know about the tournament:

Donald Budge only took part in one French Open, in 1938, but he won the title and then went on to complete the Grand Slam.

– In 1973, the men’s singles final, when Ilie Nastase beat Nikki Pilic, was held on a Tuesday due to poor weather conditions earlier in the tournament.

– Since 1980, the design of the tournament’s official poster has been awarded by the Galerie Lelong to a different contemporary artist, with Valerio Adami the first to be chosen.

– There has always been at least one Frenchman in the third round of the men’s singles at Roland Garros. There have been four occasions in the open era when there was no French interest from the Round of 16 onwards, the most recent being 1997.

– Since Wimbledon 2001, Grand Slam tournaments have all increased the number of seeds to 32 as opposed to 16, for both the women’s and men’s draws.

In 2006, the tournament began on a Sunday – a first for Grand Slam events. Some 28,000 spectators were present on this historic day.

– In 2006, the top four men’s seeds made it through to the semi-finals for the first time since 1985.

The Place des Mousquetaires, at the heart of the Roland Garros stadium, has a bronze statue at each of its four corners, depicting former French champions Jean Borotra, René Lacoste, Jacques Brugnon and Henri Cochet.

– Mini-tennis was only created in France in 1994, but today, it forms a fundamental part of the FFT’s basic training programme, alongside the “Club junior” and adult tennis programmes.

– When Yannick Noah won his home tournament in 1983 (making him the last Frenchman to date to do so), the final was shown live in the USA on NBC.

– Last year, the men’s singles final saw No1 seed Roger Federer take on No2 seed Rafael Nadal. This was the first time that the top two seeds had met in the final since 1984, when Ivan Lendl (No2) cruised to victory over John McEnroe (No1).
